NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The rings for winning the Atlantic Sun Volleyball Championship have been on the fingers of Lipscomb’s players for less than a week.
The rings are the reward for a 13-1 regular season conference record and the tournament championship. But the hard work that helps make those rings possible starts in the offseason.
The Lipscomb players have spent the last few weeks in individual workouts on the court and in strength and conditioning training.
“The spring has been fantastic so far,” Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “The players have done a lot of great work with Gabe Teeple and Kelsey Ferguson.
“I truly believe that more than any other year the girls have been in the gym on their own more than any we have had in the past. We have seen a great deal of growth in the weight room and on the court. I think that bodes well for them.”
This Thursday they get to perform as a team again when Belmont visits Allen Arena for the first match of the spring season. It is a rare spring home match for the Lipscomb and it will be the only one of the spring at Allen Arena. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30. Admission is free.
“I am excited about it,” Rosenthal said. “It is always fun to play Belmont. The competition is always good.
“This will give us a chance to digest what we need to work on the next couple of weeks. We have a couple of new wrinkles. It will be fun to see where are at and to play against someone else.”
Lipscomb will head north to Louisville on April 9 and 10. On Saturday they will play Dayton, Auburn and Illinois State in two-set matches. On Sunday they will face Louisville.
The next week they travel north again when they go to Indianapolis for a day of competition April 16. Indiana State, Missouri, Xavier and Ball State will be the opponents.
“We don’t want them to settle for how we finished last year,” Rosenthal said. “This is a brand new year.
“The rings are the last chapter for last season. We closed that and we are ready to get started preparing for this season.”
