Volleyball falls short at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky trip was as blue as the grass around Lexington for the Lipscomb volleyball team.

Saturday night the Lady Bisons lost 3-0 to Kentucky at Memorial Gym. Lipscomb ended the weekend in Kentucky 0-2 after losing Friday night to Louisville 3-2.

“We had a tough time getting into rhythm and that has something to do with what Kentucky did,” Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “It was a little bit of undisciplined play which is pretty uncharacteristic of us the past four weeks, but it is part of the grind of the scheduling.

“More than anything, when things aren’t going the way you want it to, you have to still trust in the process and what got you there. That is a tricky thing for any team. I think this team has a lot of great things going for it. We just have to tighten up some of the things we saw in this match.”

Lipscomb lost set one 25-17, set two 25-21 and set three 25-20.

“Something we have been addressing is we have to make more of an effort to have more of an impact at the beginning of sets,” Rosenthal said. “When you get behind early you start doubting and tend to play outside of your comfort zone and try to do too many things.

“We did a nice job in fighting back. There was some good stuff all weekend. We came up short, but we showed a lot of what we can do and what we need to continue to get better doing. We have to make more of an impact so we don’t have to fight from behind.”

Lipscomb is 7-4 overall. Kentucky is also 7-4.

Outside hitter Carlyle Nusbaum continued to lead the Lipscomb offense with a team-high12 kills.

Right side Taylor Racich added nine kills and a team-high .389 hitting percentage.

Libero Brittany Thomas made eight digs, a team-high.

“Defensively, we did a nice job,” Rosenthal said. “Brittany did a nice job. Lauren Anderson continues to be a solid force all the way around. Carli Anderson and Chloe Rogers came in and gave us a boost.

“We win as a team and we lose as a team. This was a match where we just didn’t do enough. We wanted it tough and we got it. Now we have to get better.”

Quick hitters:

  • Lipscomb is 0-4 against Kentucky. The Lady Bisons are 1-1 against the Southeastern Conference this season.
  • Thomas failed to reach double figures in digs in a match for the first time this season.
  • Ostrom has moved into 15th place on the ASUN all-time career assists list.
  • Coffey has played nine sets, breaking her high of six last season as a freshman.

Next up: Lipscomb returns home to open ASUN Conference play when Kennesaw State visits Sept. 23 at 6:30.

Kevin Barnett (color commentator for indoor volleyball at Rio Olympics) and DJ Roueche (DJ for the beach volleyball at Rio Olympics) will be here at Lipscomb next Thursday and Friday for the Kennesaw State match.

“We will have a couple of days to rest and refocus,” Rosenthal said. “We have a team in Kennesaw that is very dangerous. There is a rivalry building there.”
