NEWARK, N.J. – Being energized from the beginning of a match through the end has been a point of emphasis for the Lipscomb volleyball team.
After a slow start at USC Upstate Friday night, which ended as a Lipscomb victory despite losing the first two sets, coach Brandon Rosenthal was ready for his team to get after NJIT early.
“I thought the girls did a nice job of creating their own energy and building off of the momentum,” Rosenthal said. “We had talked about how important momentum is.”
Lipscomb completed a weekend on the road with a 3-0 sweep of NJIT in a rare Sunday ASUN Conference match for back-to-back victories.
The Bisons won sets one and two 25-17 and set three 25-18.
“We were coming off a tough match at Upstate,” Rosenthal said. “We had 17 kills to eight for Upstate in the first set and still lost. We had to identify why that happened. A lot of it had to do with our energy on the court.
“It was all about energy against NJIT. I was proud of the way the girls responded. We did a nice job.”
All 13 players saw action in a minimum of two sets and 10 played in portions of all three sets.
“It was fun to see them all play and have success like that,” Rosenthal said. “It makes the trip that much better.”
Outside hitter Lauren Anderson led the way with a match-high 12 kills and a match-high .647 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Carlyle Nusbaum added 10 kills.
“Lauren did a great job offensively,” Rosenthal said. “It was great to see her shine like that.
“I thought Lauren and Brittany Thomas did a nice job of heading up the offense with their passing. I was really pleased with the effort I saw.”
Nusbaum tied for the match-high in digs with eight.
It was the sixth straight win for the Bisons.
Lipscomb is 16-7, 8-2 in the ASUN. NJIT falls to 9-19, 1-9 in the conference.
“I was pleased with the effort,” Rosenthal said. “There were two or three little things where we needed to get better. We did a nice job with that.
“We had a lot of travel…a lot of different travel this weekend. Everyone had to be on their toes. I thought the staff did a great job.”
- Lauren Anderson has double figures in kills in 10 matches, a career high for matches in double figures in a season. Her 14 kills against USC Upstate this weekend also tied her season and career high.
- Lauren Anderson’s .647 hitting percentage is a season and career high.
- Nusbaum has finished in double figures in kills in 22 matches.
- Lipscomb made seven service aces with middle blocker Maddie Phillips leading with a match-high four. Nusbaum had two and Lauren Anderson added one.
Next up: The Bisons continue on the road heading to Florida to face FGCU Friday and Stetson Saturday.
