Nusbaum, Racich earn volleyball All-South Region

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb volleyball players Carlyle Nusbaum and Taylor Racich have been named to the 2016 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-South Region Team.

This marks the fourth season in a row Lipscomb has placed at least one player on the first team or honorable mention. Since 2009 Lipscomb has been represented on the South Region Team 11 times.

“It is exciting for both of them,” Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “It is well deserved. Any time you can be recognized on national level it benefits the program and the university.”

Both Nusbaum and Racich are now qualified for consideration for the AVCA All-America Team.

Nusbaum, a sophomore outside hitter from Overland Park, Kansas, has earned several honors this season including the ASUN Conference Player of the Year and ASUN Tournament Most Valuable Player awards.

She is the first Lipscomb player to be named a Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week. Nusbaum is only the second player in ASUN history to earn five player of the week awards in a season.

“Carly put up some unbelievable numbers,” Rosenthal said. “The biggest part for her is her humility. She has received quite a number of individual accolades this season, but she has stayed focused on the team and what is important.

“Moving forward we will see how she moves into a leadership role. There are a lot of challenges ahead for her, but her athleticism and her drive are both going to benefit her and also benefit us.”

Rosenthal stresses two important questions concerning Nusbaum‘s future are how does she progress in her game, especially on defense, and how does she diversify on offense.

“More and more teams are going to game plan against her,” Rosenthal said. “She has to be ready for that.

“She got through that this year, but she was surrounded by a lot of weapons. We have always had the idea that diversification in terms of offense is beneficial.”

Racich, a senior transfer from Pepperdine, made a strong impact in her only season with Lipscomb. Racich spent the past three seasons playing beach volleyball.

A right side from Santa Barbara, California, Racich was named Second Team All-ASUN and was a member of the ASUN All-Tournament team.

Racich was the ASUN leader in total service aces and ranked in the top 15 this season nationally in the NCAA is both aces and aces per set. She was seventh in the conference in kills per set and ninth in total kills.

“I don’t know if people realize how hard it was for Taylor to do what she did in that short amount of time,” Rosenthal said. “It is a very apropos story for this program to have somebody come in and fit in and do what she did.

“A lot of the credit goes to Taylor and the girls for making at all work. Beach volleyball and (indoor) volleyball are completely different.”

Rosenthal admits he wasn’t 100 percent sure how quickly Racich would fit in and what her impact would be.

“We knew she was going to have a positive effect as far as her skills,” Rosenthal said. “But we knew the game was going to be a lot faster than she was used to playing and she was going to be relied on a lot more.

“In two-on-two in beach volleyball you are either passing or setting. In six-on-six you have to potentially do it all. There are a lot of things coming at you.”

They are joined on the 14-player team by players from Texas A&M, Western Kentucky, Auburn, Ole Miss, Alabama and Coastal Carolina. Western Kentucky and Texas A&M each placed three players on the team. Lipscomb, Ole Miss and Coastal Carolina each had two players named.

“What we have always tried to do with this program is to be relevant on a national scale,” Rosenthal said. “This is just another indication we are doing that. It is fun to be a part of it.”
