LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) recently recognized the Lipscomb athletics media relations staff as the top Sports Information department in the South Region for its work in the coverage of Lipscomb volleyball in 2016.
"This award is a great recognition for a lot of long hours and hard work by a great team," said Lipscomb assistant athletic director for communications and broadcasting Jamie Gilliam. "Being recognized by the AVCA with this award is an honor and would not have been possible without the efforts of Mark McGee, Austin Gwin and Michael Fox in their combined coverage of Lipscomb volleyball."
That coverage consisted of writing, videos, and broadcasts for the 2016 championship volleyball season for the Bisons. Ten Division I schools were honored as regional winners with Lipscomb joining Sacramento St., UNLV, Texas, Northern Iowa, Minnesota, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Stony Brook and Creighton.
Winning the Grant Burger Media Award, AVCA’s highest honor, was Nashville native and friend of the Lipscomb volleyball program Vinnie Lopes. Lopes created the “Off the Block” podcast in 2011 which covers men’s volleyball nationally. Lopes regularly attends Lipscomb volleyball matches and is often a part of Lipscomb’s ESPN3 coverage.
“One of the amazing things about the volleyball community is how everyone is tight-knit, and we all work together to grow the game,” Lopes said. “The media can play a critical role in the growth of volleyball both nationally and locally here in Nashville. Coach Brandon Rosenthal and the entire Lipscomb athletics department understand that and embrace it.”
Both Lipscomb and Lopes are first time honorees in their respective categories.
