Volleyball looks to get back on track in Gator Invite

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Lipscomb volleyball team is traveling to the Sunshine State this weekend for its final tuneups before ASUN Conference action next week. The Bisons will look to get back on track in the Gator Invitational after dropping their last four matches.

Lipscomb will get the action started Friday at 9 a.m. against Northern Kentucky before taking on Florida A&M at 4 p.m. later in the day. The Bisons will then get a primetime match against No. 3 Florida at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Live stats will be available, but only the match with the Gators will be televised on SEC Network +.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Lipscomb leads the all-time series with Northern Kentucky 6-1. The teams last met in 2014 in the ASUN Tournament, a come from behind 3-2 victory for Lipscomb to send the Bisons to the championship match. The Norse jumped to the Horizon League the very next season.
  • The meetings with Florida A&M and the University of Florida will be the first ever between the programs.

 

 SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION

Northern Kentucky (4-2)

The Norse enter the weekend having lost their last two matches after going 1-2 in their own Invitational last weekend.

Defensively they are the sixth best team in the nation with 18.57 digs per set and are holding opponents to just a .162 hitting clip. On the other side they are 26th in attacks per set (38.26).

Attackers Laura Crawford and Haley Libs are averaging double-doubles on the season for the Norse. Crawford is at 15.50 kills and 14.67 digs per match, while Libs is averaging 13.17 kills and 16.00 digs.

Setter Shelby Olsen is also averaging a double-double with 41.17 assists and 11.00 digs per outing.


Florida A&M (1-6)

The Rattlers bring a 1-6 ledger to Gainesville, with its long win coming against San Francisco.

While Candelaria Herrera, a freshman, is the team’s top hitter at .268 (62k, 24e, 124ta), it is Nicole Abreu who is tops in the MEAC with 4.00 kills per set.

Elena Dimitrova paces the squad with 8.60 assists per set and Valentina Carrasco is first in digs at 4.89.

 

No. 3 Florida (4-0)
The third-ranked Gators bring an unblemished record into the weekend and will present the Bisons with their toughest matchup of the season. UF is one of only three teams in the nation with three wins over ranked opponents – No. 1 Texas, No. 5 Nebraska and No. 16 North Carolina.

Head coach Mary Wise, now in her 27th year at Florida, is just two wins shy of reaching 800 for her Gators career.

Florida is 18th in the country in digs per set (17.67), a category it ranked 208th in last season (14.24). The Gators also rank 24th in blocks per set (2.80).

Rhamat Alhassan leads the SEC and ranks seventh nationally in blocks per set (1.67), while setter Cheyenne Huskey ranks third in the SEC and tied for 36th nationally with 1.42 blocks per set.

Rachael Kramer ranks sixth nationally in hitting percentage (.494), up three spots from last week.

 

QUICK HITS:

  • Florida will be the fourth ranked team the Bisons have faced this season. (No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 20 Ohio State, No. 24 Arizona).
  • Outside hitter Carlyle Nusbaum leads the ASUN with 159 total kills and ranks 12th in the nation with 4.82 kills per set. Her 5.09 points per set is 17th
  • Libero Brittany Thomas is averaging 3.39 digs per set to lead the team defensively. She has recorded double-digit digs in six of nine matches this season.
  • Right side Chloe Rogers is having the best start of her career. She is averaging 2.31 kills per set, with her previous best mark coming in 2015 at 2.05.
  • The Bisons are 37th nationally with 37.76 attacks per set and 53rd in assists per set (12.97).
  • Nusbaum leads the team with five double-doubles this season, including three straight.
  • Ca’Layci Coffey is tops on the team with 38 total blocks. She has accumulated five solo’s and 33 assisted. She notched a career high of eight in back-to-back matches against Arizona and Oakland.
  • Maddie Phillips is third on the Bisons with 75 points and 61 kills. Her 18 total blocks are second most.
  • Setters Morgan Elmore and Marcella Emmanuelli have recorded 196 and 178 assists, respectively.
  • After reaching 20+ helpers in each of her first five matches, Elmore has topped 18 just once in her last four.

 

UP NEXT

Lipscomb gets a week off before starting its ASUN portion of the schedule. The Bisons will trek to Kennesaw State next Friday, Sept. 22 for a 6 p.m. match. It will be the only game of the week for Lipscomb.
