Volleyball suffers sweep at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Lipscomb volleyball opened play Friday with a 3-0 loss to the University of Arizona in the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Arizona. The Wildcats took the sets 25-17, 25-20 and 25-13 at the McKale Center.

“Unfortunately this match was uncharacteristic for us in terms of our effort of play,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “It was definitely something that traditionally our program doesn’t do. We played with little moxie.

“But I have to give Arizona credit. They executed their game plan and beat us pretty good.”

The loss is Lipscomb’s (2-1) first of the season, while the Wildcats remain unbeaten at 4-0.

Senior Carlyle Nusbaum was the only Bison to finish with double figures in kills with 12.

The Wildcats dominated most of the match behind an efficient offense and a season-high in miscues for the Bisons.

UA hit .432 as a team to raise its season average to .310, a number that ranks 10th in the nation. It recorded 46 kills on 88 swings. The Bisons hit .196 as a squad with 35 kills and 17 errors on 92 attacks.

“We did not play with any sort of aggressiveness, we were a reactionary team,” Rosenthal said. “From the serving standpoint, we made it too easy for them. We have to find a way to create energy early.”

Arizona took control of the match in the first set behind seven kills from Kendra Dahlke, who had seven kills on 12 swings. The Wildcats outhit Lipscomb .441 to .176.  Seven of Nusbaum’s 12 kills came in the opening frame as well.

After going down six points on four different occasions in the second set, the Bisons found a way to cut the deficit to 17-15 on Maddie Phillips’ second kill of the match. Lipscomb committed errors on three consecutive possessions to allow Arizona to stretch its lead back out and hold on to get the victory.

In the final set, the Purple and Gold managed to hit -.067 and had five balls swatted. They killed seven swings and made nine miscues on 30 attacks.

  • The Bisons are now 1-2 all-time against Arizona.
  • Sophomore Megan Kuper finished second best on the Bisons with six kills, while seniors Ca’Layci Coffey and Carli Anderson each recorded five.
  • Kuper hit a team high .375 and did not make an error.
  • Lauren Anderson made her third start at Libero and came away with a team high seven digs.
  • Marcella Emmanuelli came off the bench to dish 16 assists.
  • Lipscomb recorded three blocks as a team.

Lipscomb is back in action at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Pacific for its second of three matches in the Cactus Classic.

“We have another test ahead of us tonight, so it’s something we have to figure out on the fly,” Rosenthal said. “This is the reason we are playing in these tournaments. We needed a challenge like this and I would rather it happen now than later.”
