NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb Bisons put the finishing touches on a perfect ASUN weekend and they did it with a flourish with a 3-0 sweep of Stetson.
The Bisons extended their record in the ASUN to 4-0, 9-7 overall with the win Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena. Stetson falls to 1-2 in the conference, 9-6 overall. Friday night the Bisons defeated North Florida 3-1 Friday night.
“The key was our defense,” Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “Our defense today was probably the cleanest we have played. And when I say clean I mean it was really disciplined and very precise. The communication was fantastic on defense.
“We were able to really put the pressure on them. It had everything to do with our serve and our defense. It was fun to see. We have worked hard over the past couple of weeks to make some of that really come into fruition. It was awesome…it really was…to see it all working.”
After starting off the match with a 25-12 set win, the Bisons won sets two and three by identical 25-16 scores.
The second set featured 11 ties, the final one at 15-15. The Bisons then went on a 10-1 run, sparked by four kills by Megan Kuper and two by Samantha Rubal.
The Bisons jumped out to a 2-1 led in set three and never trailed from that point. Leading 16-5, the Bisons had to fight off a final charge by Stetson. The Hatters outscored Lipscomb 11-9 from that point but could not overcome the deficit.
Outside hitter Carlyle Nusbaum led with a match-high 16 kills, but the middles were also effective with Rubal making 13 kills and Ca’Layci Coffey adding 10.
“The middles were great,” Rosenthal said. “They put balls away. They were great.
“We scored 75 points and we earned 63 of the 75. That is hard to do. At some point the other team is going to make things happen.”
Morgan Elmore made a match-high 43 assists. Nusbaum led the Bisons with 12 kills, for a double-double in kills and digs. Ashley Maher added 11 digs.
Eva Deisa led Stetson with eight kills. Chelcie Spence made a match-high 18 digs. Anna Bezhan added 12.
“I was impressed with our energy,” Rosenthal said. “I was impressed with what our girls worked at all day.”
- Rubal’s 13 kills and .520 hitting percentage (no errors) were both career highs. It was her second start of the season and second start of the weekend.
- Lipscomb is 6-0 at Allen Arena. The Bisons have won their last four matches.
- Kuper once again just missed her first double-double with nine kills and eight digs. She has at least eight digs in 10 matches.
- Nusbaum has been in double figures in kills in 15-of-16 matches.
- Nusbaum’s .481 hitting percentage against Stetson was her second best of the season.
The Bisons are on the road for their next two matches, both in the ASUN. They travel to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., Oct. 5 and then head south to FGCU for an Oct. 7 match.
