FLORENCE, Ala. – After dropping the first set, the Lipscomb Volleyball team came roaring back to win three sets in a row at North Alabama on Tuesday night, defeating the Lions 3-1.
The Bions fell behind early, losing set one 25-23 in their first-ever visit to Flowers Hall in Florence, Alabama.
“We came out and were a little sloppy in the first set,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “We didn’t really do anything to change and it helped them (UNA) build confidence.
“As we moved to set two, we wanted to give them a little more to deal with than just our errors. We wanted to impose our physicality and I felt we could get on them with our serve.”
But, Lipscomb quickly rallied, taking the new ASUN members down 25-20, 25-11, and 25-18 over the next three sets.
In the third set, the Purple and Gold rode a 10-0 run to a dominant 14-point victory.
Senior Carlyle Nusbaum posted a game-high 15 kills, while fellow senior Ca’Layci Coffey was close behind with 14.
“When Ca’Layci has matches like this, it stretches the block, and that is big when we get off to slow starts like we did tonight,” Rosenthal said. “She’s playing really well right now and it's only going to help us add pressure on the defenses.”
Sophomore middle Sami Rubal provided the Bisons plenty of help on both sides of the net with 10 kills and five blocks.
Freshman Logan Gish chipped in her best match as a Bison. The outside hitter totaled career highs with 10 kills and three blocks. She did not commit an error and swung .435.
"Sami and Logan did an outstanding job of taking care of their opportunities," Rosenthal said. "It was great to see Logan come in and UNA not have an answer for her. She moved the ball around extremely well and put a lot of pressure on the defense."
Senior Lauren Anderson paced Lipscomb with 17 digs, while sophomore Ashley Maher notched 14, and junior Morgan Elmore, sophomore Megan Kuper, and Nusbaum all collected 13.
Lipscomb improves to 13-9 (8-2 in the ASUN) with the win, while UNA falls to 2-17 (0-10).
- Coffey has finished in double figures in kills in the last five matches in a row. She has been in double figures in kills in eight matches this season.
- Lauren Anderson was in double figures in digs for the 14th time this season.
- Lipscomb opened up the ASUN portion of the schedule with a 3-0 sweep of UNA, giving Lipscomb a season sweep of the Lions in their first season in the conference.
- Coffey led the Bisons with a .448 hitting percentage.
- Lipscomb played 11 players in the match.
- The Purple and Gold dished out 54 assists to UNA’s 31.
- No one on North Alabama posted double-figure kills.
Lipcomb hits the hardwood again this weekend with a pair of matches in the Sunshine State. The Bisons will first visit Stetson on Friday at 5 p.m. before going to North Florida on Saturday.
“This is a tough week with three straight matches all on the road,” Rosenthal said. “We get back late tonight and leave early on Thursday, it’s a challenge.
“This is the hard part of the season when you have to find ways to win. Now we move on to North Florida and Stetson.”
