MAHER - 10
NASHVILLE - Behind four players with double-figure kills, the Lipscomb volleyball team took down Xavier, 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 26-24, 27-25), in its home opener Friday night in the LUV Invite.
The Bisons (3-4) were powered by 17 kills on 43 swings from freshman Lauren Myrick. She added six digs and one block to her career-best performance.
Garrett Joiner and Maddie Phillips each added 14 kills, while Lanie Wagner chipped in with 12.
Lipscomb’s offense was led by a match-high 54 assists from senior setter Morgan Elmore.
On the opposite side of the net, Alyssa Zwolensky and Ashley Maher each dug out a team-high 10 balls and the Bisons did not have a reception error.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With the home crowd behind them, the Bisons used a 16-4 run to turn a two-point deficit into a 10-point advantage on a kill from Maddie Phillips, putting the home team up 23-13. After four straight points from the Musketeers (3-4), a service error and a kill from Joiner sealed the opening-set win.
In set two, Xavier hit .312 and committed just three errors en route to the win. The Musketeers took advantage of five consecutive Lipscomb errors to take an 18-12 lead and force Rosenthal to call both of his timeouts. Down six and facing set point, Phillips and Joiner recorded kills to trim the deficit to three, but that would be as close as the Bisons would get.
Maher opened the third frame with her sixth ace of the season, setting the tempo for Lipscomb to build a 12-7 lead. Following a timeout, Xavier began chipping away and eventually scored three straight points to take a 21-20 lead and force a Lipscomb timeout. Lauren Myrick produced a pair of kills late to ultimately lead the Bisons to victory.
Early on in the fourth frame, it was all Bisons as back-to-back kills from Myrick put the purple and gold ahead 16-5. However, Xavier went on an 18-6 run to take a 23-22 lead. After exchanging points, the Bisons took four of the last five points to earn the win.
- Lipscomb has now won three matches in a row after opening the season 0-3.
- The Bisons outhit the Musketeers .299 to .244 after committing just 23 errors on 147 attacks.
- Phillips added a team-high four blocks and five digs to her line.
- Sami Rubal recorded eight kills and a dig.
The Bisons will play #23 Purdue at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the final game of the LUV Invite.
