Bisons fall in four sets to #23 Purdue in LUV Invite title match

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb volleyball closed out the LUV Invite Saturday night with a hard-fought, 3-1, defeat to No. 23 Purdue in the championship match at Allen Arena.

The loss halts a three-match win streak for the Bisons (3-5) while the Boilermakers improve to 4-1.

Senior middle blocker Maddie Phillips was the only Lipscomb player with double figures in kills with 11. Lauren Myrick and Garrett Joiner added nine apiece.

Setter Morgan Elmore controlled the offense with 31 of the team’s 35 assists, while also adding eight digs and three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bisons and Boilermakers played a back-and-forth opening set with neither side gaining more than a three-point advantage. After going down 23-22 and calling a timeout the purple and gold came out on fire, and behind a kill from Lanie Wagner, won the next three points to grab the 25-23 opening-set victory.

Purdue got the second frame going with the first 13 points and eventually rolled to a 25-13 victory after outhing the Bisons .455 to -.037.

The Boilermakers kept the momentum going in the third. Tied at 17, Purdue got back-to-back aces and took advantage of a pair of Lipscomb mistakes to win the frame 25-20.

Needing to win the fourth set to extend the match, Lipscomb gave Purdue all it could handle early. Purdue transfer Garrett Joiner recorded a trio of kills to pull the Bisons to within 11-9. Later in the set down 10, Phillips went back-to-back-to-back to spark a 4-0 run, but it wasn’t enough as Purdue ended the match on a Grace Cleveland ace, 25-17.
