Volleyball struggles in loss to Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Playing its fifth Power 5 team of the season, the Lipscomb volleyball team fell to the host Iowa Hawkeyes, 3-0, Friday morning in its second match of Cy-Hawk Series Tournament.

The Bisons (3-7) were led by Maddie Phillips and Garrett Joiner, who totaled eight kills each. Lauren Myrick added five kills, four digs and two blocks.

Morgan Elmore led the team with 21 assists, while Alyssa Zwolensky picked up a team-high 12 digs.

Down six points in the first set, the Bisons put together an 11-3 run behind a pair of aces from Phillips and Elmore to lead 15-13. With the Hawkeyes (6-3) holding a narrow one-point lead late in the frame, the Bisons were unable to stop Courtney Buzzerio, who had three straight kills to give Iowa the 25-21 victory.

Set two was much of the same as Lipscomb strung together a 6-1 run midway through to trim the deficit as Phillips and Myrick recorded four kills. The Bisons took advantage of three Iowa attack errors late, but the Hawkeyes were able to pull it out, 25-20.

In the final set, Lipscomb was unable to gain any momentum with nine attack errors. The Hawkeyes hit .360 to win the set and the match, 25-13.
