Joiner's career day lifts Bisons over Chants in five

IOWA CITY, Iowa – After a tough last two days, the Lipscomb volleyball team bounced back in a big way Saturday after coming from behind to beat Coastal Carolina, 3-2, in the final match of the Cy-Hawk Series Tournament.

The win improves the Bisons to 4-7 on the year and gives them some momentum heading into ASUN Conference play next weekend. Bringing an unblemished record to Iowa, Coastal Carolina lost its second match of the weekend and falls to 10-2.

After cruising to victory in the first set, the Bisons found themselves in a must-win situation with losses in the second and third. Lipscomb then rallied from being down 16-12 in the fourth set to extend the match, before controlling the fifth set to claim a 25-18, 19-25, 24-26, 25-21, 15-12 victory.

The match featured big runs in each set that proved to be the difference makers.

The Bisons put the opening set away thanks to a 6-1 closing run that broke open a two-point advantage late in the action. In the second set, Coastal used four different 3-0 runs that gave them the lead late, before a 5-1 run sealed the win for the Chants.

Coastal Carolina rattled off five unanswered points midway through the third set to erase Lipscomb’s lead, before the Bisons regained the lead at 22-18. Following a timeout from Coastal, the Chants responded with an 8-2 run to win the frame in extra points, 26-24.

The fourth saw the fortunes swapped. Trailing 16-12 after a timeout, Lipscomb scored 13 of the final 18 points, including a set-clinching block from Sami Rubal and Lauren Myrick, to take the frame and extend the match.

In the deciding set, a 5-0 Lipscomb run erased an early deficit and then Lanie Wagner and Garrett Joiner connected on three-straight kills to seal the match for the Bisons.

The Bisons got production from a number of players as Joiner and Rubal each posted a season high in kills. Joiner led the way with 16, while Rubal added 15, a .542 hitting clip and three blocks.

Maddie Phillips swung .440 and collected 13 kills to go along with a team-high five blocks. Lanie Wagner was the fourth Bison in double figures with 12 kills.
