The Lipscomb Lady Bisons placed three players in double figures, but that stat couldn’t overcome a less than Impressive defensive performance.
Guard Anna Bowers led the Lady Bisons with 16 points, guard Jenna Bartsokas connected for 13 and forward Brittany Duerk added 12. In their seven victories this season the most consistent stat had been that three Lady Bisons had been in double figures.
“With 81 points scored by Campbell we probably needed more than three scorers,” Lipscomb coach Frank Bennett said. “It is hard to outscore a team that has scored 81.
“I felt like we could have held Campbell into the 50s or low 60s. I don’t know what the reason was, but our defense just did not execute.”
Defensively the Lady Bisons couldn’t control Campbell in an 81-66 Atlantic Sun loss Monday night at Allen Arena. Campbell tied its season high for the season, having scored 81 in an 85-81 loss at Wofford Nov. 17.
It was the second time this season the Lady Bisons have allowed 81 points in a loss. They fell to Tennessee Tech 81-65 Nov. 18.
“We just did not play defense as a team,” Bennett said. “I don’t know how we could have not been up for this game. But for some reason we were not ready to come out and take charge defensively. It’s hard to explain. It was a big game for us.
“We did not meet their drives. They shot 21 layups in the second half and probably had the same number in the first half. The first thing you have to do is stop the layups and we did not meet the ball. We did not rotate.”
The Lady Bisons are 7-10, 4-4 in the conference. Campbell, winner of its sixth straight game, is 7-10, 6-2 in the A-Sun.
Campbell held a 48-33 rebounding advantage.
Duerk and Campbell’s Katelyn Bass and Yesh all tied for the game high with eight boards apiece. Lady Bisons center Jess Reece added seven rebounds and nine points along with two blocked shots. Duerk has 18 rebounds in her past two games.
“Brittany has been consistently playing better,” Bennett said. “She was four-for-four in the first half, but not quite as strong in the second half scoring. She has picked it up a little the past two or three games.
“I thought Jess had probably her best rebounding game. Without Brittany and Jess we had only 18 rebounds from the rest of our players.”
Campbell was led by Courtney Cannon who came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points. Forward Lauren Yesh added 14.
The Lady Bisons are on the road for their next two games playing Saturday at ESTU and Jan. 24 at USC Upstate.
