MACON, Ga. – With the 2011-12 season set to kick off in less than a month, Lipscomb senior guard Anna Bowers has been named to the 2011 All-Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason team as announced by the league on Tuesday.
“We’re excited about Anna being chosen preseason all-conference,” said head coach Frank Bennett. “She’s worked hard to be in that position and has been an outstanding player for us the last three years. It’s good to get recognition for our team in that way.”
Bowers returns for the Lady Bisons after a junior season that saw the Nashville native average 13.2 points-per-contest. The veteran saw action in all 30 contests a year ago including 18 starts in the back court for Lipscomb.
“Anna’s going to be one of our key players this year,” said Bennett. “She’s a good scorer and a good defender. She’s working really hard in practice and taking it to a new level, so we’re expecting great things from her this year.”
Stetson’s Victoria McGowan was selected as Preseason Player of the Year, while North Florida’s Lakira Jones was tabbed as Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Joining Bowers and Jones on the team are Briana Williams (Mercer), Haley Nelson (Belmont), Tee’ Ara Copney (USC Upstate), Sarah Hansen (FGCU), Destiny Mitchell (ETSU), Brittany Kirkland (North Florida), Courtney Chihil (FGCU), Sametria Gideon (Kennesaw State) and Sasha Sims (Stetson).
The league coaches and media both predicted that FGCU would finish the regular season atop the A-Sun standings and take the 2012 A-Sun Tournament as well. Lipscomb was predicted by both groups to finish 10th in the league.
The Lady Bisons open the 2011-12 season on Nov. 5 hosting Harding in a 5 p.m. exhibition at Allen Arena. To purchase season tickets visit http://www.LipscombTickets.com or call 615-566-5166.
