DeLand, Fla. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team got a view of the top of the Atlantic Sun Conference in a 92-51 loss to Stetson on Saturday afternoon in DeLand, Fla.
Stetson, the preseason favorites and co-leaders in the A-Sun, used 55.4 percent shooting from the field to improve to 14-4 overall and 7-0 in A-Sun action. The Lady Bisons fall to 2-14 and 1-5 in league play.
“Stetson is a very good team,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. “When you give good teams easy looks at the basket and don’t execute well yourself, you have a very small margin of error.”
Entering the game, Stetson and Lipscomb ranked 2nd and 3rd in made 3-point field goals, respectively. The two squads combined to make 23 treys. All but two field goals from the Lady Bisons, who rank 49th in the NCAA with 6.7 made treys per game, in the first half were 3-point baskets.
A slow start hampered the Lady Bisons as the Hatters built a 10-0 lead over the first 2:32 before freshman Alex Banks sank a trey for the first LU points.
A made 3-point basket from Presley Stastny as time expired brought the halftime score to 50-26. The Hatters shot a blistering 58.1 percent from the field in the first half to aid their effort.
In the second half, the Hatters raced off to a 7-0 run until freshman Kelli Smith found Banks for an open jumper to bring the score to 57-28. The Hatters kept their foot on the gas however and raced to the 92-51 win.
The Lady Bisons held A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year Victoria McGowan to just 15 points on nine shot attempts but Sasha Sims and Cherisse Burris picked up the slack for the Hatters with 22 and 16 points, respectively.
“McGowan is a very talented player,” Brown said. “On the flip side of defending her is you can’t give other guys career nights. Good players will hit open shots.”
Sims was 9-for-11 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from long range.
Smith led the Lady Bisons with 11 points while Stastny added nine points, all 3-point baskets.
What can we learn is the key,” Brown said. “The main thing is to keep what we are trying to do in front of us. We also need to tighten things up.
“We have asked each player to write two things down of what they will bring to the game Monday. Right now it is about growth. We would like to grow from a win but we have to grow from a loss.”
Lipscomb returns to action Monday at Florida Gulf Coast. Tipoff in Ft. Myers is slated for 6:05 p.m.
