FT. Myers, Fla. – For the second-straight game, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team faced a co-leader of the Atlantic Sun Conference and for the second-straight game, the Lady Bisons didn’t like what they saw.
After holding Florida Gulf Coast to just 24 percent shooting in the first half, a second half surge gave the Lady Bisons a 67-37 defeat Monday night in Ft. Myers, Fla.
“We ran a zone defense in the whole first half and we did a nice job,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. “In the second half, they made some adjustments and were better at executing their adjustments than we were with countering.
“All-in-all I was pleased with what we did in the zone for how little we work on it. I think there were some areas of growth out here for us.”
The Eagles improve to 15-5 and a league best 8-0 while the Lady Bisons slip to 2-14 overall and 1-6 in the A-Sun.
With action bantering back and forth to start the game, FGCU jumped on the scoreboard with a 3-point basket from Jaime Gluesing at the 17:04 mark. Brittany Kennedy, Preseason A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year, made a steal and converted the layup for the 5-0 lead.
Freshman Alex Banks answered on the ensuing Lady Bisons possession with a 3-point basket.
Lipscomb put the clamps on defensively on the next Eagles possession and tied the game at 5-5 on a Banks layup with 15:16 remaining in the first half.
Over the next five minutes of action, FGCU went on an 11-0 run to build a 16-5 lead. Freshman Mallory Charpentier stopped the run with a layup with 10:03 remaining in the first stanza.
Starting with Charpentier’s basket the Lady Bisons pushed a 7-0 run to bring the deficit to just three. Banks scored on a jumper just in front of the basket and Charpentier followed with another driving layup. Junior Jess Reece brought the score to 16-13 on a short jumper from the right baseline with 6:43 remaining.
Florida Gulf Coast slowly rebuilt their lead heading into halftime with a score of 26-18.
After holding the Eagles to a 4-of-27 (14.3 percent) from long range in the first half, FGCU showed why they rank third in the NCAA in made 3-point baskets. FGCU was able to connect on seven long range baskets in the second half.
A 27-5 run lasting 8:24 downed any hope of a Lady Bisons upset attempt.
Banks scored a game-high 17 points while freshman Kelli Smith snagged seven rebounds for the Lady Bisons. FGCU placed three in double-digits led by Joyce Iamstrong with 12 points.
“As we head into next weekend we need to sustain one half to the next,” Brown said. “We need to be able to sustain the good runs, and we had good runs tonight, into four minute segments.”
The Lady Bisons return to the friendly confines of Allen Arena on Saturday, hosting “We Back Pat” night benefitting the Pat Summitt Foundation on Saturday. The contest against Mercer starts at 4 p.m.
