NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team had two future teammates on the opposite side of the court this past weekend as they played against each other for the state championship.
The future Lady Bisons each scored in double-digits as Faith LeGate scored 12 points for CPA and Kelsey Gregory scored 13 points for Macon County as CPA won the state title in a thrilling 52-49 victory.
“It was exciting to sit there in a championship environment and watch two of your future players battle,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. “It also speaks to the fact that we talk so much about competing and the background they come in with. They will be coming in with championship experience.”
CPA finished the season with a 30-7 record and their second-straight state championship. Lipscomb freshman guard Mallory Charpentier was a member of the state championship squad last season.
Macon County finished the season 30-5 as Gregory was her team’s leading scorer and advanced to the state championship game for the second time in three years.
Both LeGate and Gregory earned All-Tournament honors.
The Lady Bisons have another opportunity for tournament success as Sara Bliss of the Volunteer State Community College travels to Salina, Kan., for the Junior College National Tournament beginning Monday, March 18.
“From the two in the state championship to Sara in the national tournament, championship experience is the type of thing they will bring in culture-wise immediately here,” Brown said. “As a coach that is exciting as we build this going forward.”
