Fond memories of North Carolina have been few for the Lady Bisons basketball team.
They closed out a two-game trip east Saturday with a 66-59 Atlantic Sun loss at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.
In the first half the lead changed 17 times with the Lady Bisons holding a 28-26 lead at the half thanks to a pair of free throws by center Penny Jones with 32 seconds left.
The Lady Bisons stayed in control early in the second half, leading by seven (33-26) with 18:52 left to play.
Gardner-Webb tied the score at 33-33 with 15:33 on the clock and took a four-point lead (37-33) with 13:52 left.
The Lady Bisons tied the game for the eighth time at 40-40 with 11:26 remaining on a lay-up by guard Toia McGowan. She was fouled on the play and gave the Lady Bisons a 41-40 lead when she hit the free throw.
Gardner-Webb answered with a lay-up by Shameka Smith for a 42-41 lead. The Lady Bisons were not able to tie the game or regain the lead again.
Junior guard Dana Carrigan scored 18 points to lead the Lady Bisons, her fourth straight game in double figures and sixth out of her last seven. Catie Woods added 12 points, also her fourth straight double figures game and sixth out of her last seven.
Jones led the Lady Bisons with nine rebounds, her eighth time to lead on the boards.
The Lady Bisons shot 31.1 percent from the field, hitting 19-of-61 attempts. From the 3-point line the Lady Bisons hit seven-of-23, 30.4 percent. The Lady Bisons hit 14 of their 18 attempts from the free throw line, a 77.6 percent success rate.
Gardner-Webb held a 42-39 advantage on the boards. Smith and Brittany Harmon each grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Harmon finished with a double-double scoring a game-high 19 points. Candyse Kelly added 14.
Gardner-Webb hit 25-of-61 shots from the field, 41 percent and six-of-11 from 3-point range, 54.5 percent. At the free throw line Gardner-Webb hit 10-of-15 shots, 66.7 percent.
With the loss the Lady Bisons are 5-14 overall, 3-6 in the conference. Gardner-Webb is 7-13, 4-5 in the A-Sun.
The Lady Bisons are back in Allen Arena Thursday night at 7 for a visit from Kennesaw State.
