Lipscomb center Katie Rollins barely missed posting a double-double as the Lady Bisons beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 48-43 Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Commerce Bank/Wildcat Classic hosted by Kansas State.
The game was played at the Bramlage Center in Manhattan, Kansas.
Rollins led the Lady Bisons with 15 points which is a career high, a season high and a game high. It was her second straight time to lead the Lady Bisons in scoring and the third time this season. She also grabbed a game-high and season-high nine rebounds.
"Katie has definitely been our most consistent inside scorer," said Lady Bisons coach Frank Bennett. "It was good to see her get her rebound total up in this game."
Bennett was hoping that Rollins would take her game to another level this season.
"Katie is in better shape," Bennett said. "She is running the floor better. She has simplified her game using both her left hook and right jump hook shots. Using both her left and right hands she has been able to vary her rhythm."
For the third game in a row the Lady Bisons have placed only one player in double figures in scoring. Guard Catie Woods hit 3-of-11 3-point shots for nine points, narrowly missing her second double figures game of the season. All three of her field goals came in the second half.
They shot 27.5 percent from the field (15-of-55), 20. 8 percent from 3-point range (5-of-24) and 76.5 percent from the free throw line (76.5 percent).
Arkansas-Pine Bluff twice pulled to within three points of the Lady Bisons in the final 22 seconds.
Rollins and wing Jilian Partin each hit a pair of free throws each time to keep Arkansas-Pine Bluff five points behind. With 1:48 left to play freshman guard Jenna Bartsokas hit a pair of free throws as the Lady Bisons went six-for-six down the stretch at the line.
The Lady Bisons held a 45-37 advantage on the boards, another key to the game.
"We struggled offensively, but we had players step up and make big plays," Bennett said, "We could get any consistency in our offense, but rebounding and free throws made a difference."
The Lady Bisons held a 23-19 lead at the half.
Ciara Shields was the only Arkansas-Pine Bluff player to finish in double figures. She scored 10 points. She also was the team leader in rebounds with eight.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff shot 27. 7 percent from the field, hitting 18-of-65 shots. They were one-for-10 from 3-point range. They made 6-of-9 free throws.
The Lady Bisons 2-7 overall. Arkansas-Pine Bluff fell to 1-5.
