Lipscomb's Lady Bisons won their first Atlantic Sun game on their home court Monday night with an 82-47 win over USC Upstate at Allen Arena.
"It was a solid team effort," said Lipscomb coach Frank Bennett. "Everyone came in and made contributions. We needed to play well and we did. We needed to boost our confidence."
The Lady Bisons scored the first two points in the game on a pair of free throws by center Kaleigh Gossman. Upstate never managed to lead in the game and never tied the score.
It was the first meeting between the Lady Bisons and USC Upstate in basketball.
With 12:01 left in the first half the Lady Bisons stretched their lead to 16-6 on a jump shot by freshman forward Valerie Bronson. They would maintain a double figure lead the rest of the way.
The biggest first half lead for the Lady Bisons was 19 points as senior guard Dana Carrigan hit a 3-pointer for a 33-14 lead.
The Lady Bisons were never threatened in the second half leading by 20 or more points for the final 14:37.
The biggest lead of the game for the Lady Bisons was 38 points, 81-43, on a lay-up by freshman forward Cree Nix with 2:10 remaining.
Eleven Lady Bisons played in the game with everyone playing 12 or more minutes. Freshman point guard Miaca Bowman was the only Lady Bisons player to not score in the game.
Freshman guard Jenna Bartsokas led the Lady Bisons in scoring with 14 points, one point short of tying her season and career high 15 set at Arkansas Nov. 11. Junior forward Jilian Partin and Carrigan each added 12 points. It was a season high for Carrigan in points.
"It was good to see Bartsokas shoot so well," Bennett said. "We changed some things around with Catie Woods back at the point and Bartoskas at the two guard hoping it might help them with their shooting.
"Carrigan had a solid all-around game. She also had four assists, three steals and only one turnover."
Partin earned her second double-double of the season by grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Nix finished with a season-high and career-high nine rebounds. Nix also played a season and career high 24 minutes.
"Cree is our top rebounder per minutes played along with Jilian," Bennett said. "Cree has a chance to be a great rebounder for us."
Courtney Hawkins led USC Upstate with a game-high 18 points.
The Lady Bisons are 4-14, 2-3 in the Atlantic Sun. USC Upstate slipped to 4-14, 0-5 in the conference.
The Lady Bisons return to Allen Arena Thursday night at 7 for a non-conference game with Evansville.
"Evansville is coming from the Missouri Valley Conference, a higher conference than ours," said Bennett. "They are a very solid team. They can score and they are very strong. Hopefully, since we are playing at home we can rise to the occasion and play well."
