Thursday, February 19, 2009The Lady Bisons basketball team made a strong showing against Mercer, but lost 68-56 Thursday night at the University Center in Macon, Ga.
Senior forward Jilian Partin started the scoring for the Lady Bisons as she opened with a 3-pointer 58 seconds into the game.
Holding on to a 12-11 edge at 18:11 the Lady Bisons went on a 7-0 run with sophomore guard Jenna Bartoskas hitting a 3-pointer at 11:55 for an 18-11 advantage.
The Lady Bisons continued to build on their lead with freshman guard Anna Bowers connecting on 3-point shots at 9:24 and 7:22 for a 27-16 lead.
Senior center Katie Rollins hit a 3-pointer with 6:34 left in the first half to push the Lady Bisons ahead 30-16.
It would be the last Lady Bisons field goal of the half, but not the last points. Valerie Bronson hit a pair of free throws with one second left before intermission for a 32-23 Lady Bisons lead.
The second half started out strong for the Lady Bisons as well. Freshman center Clair Waggener connected on a jumper 27 seconds into the half for a 34-23 lead.
Mercer then went on a 12-2 run. Freshman forward Lady Bisons held Mercer off with jump shots at 14:15 and 13:35. The last one gave the Lady Bisons a 38-35 lead.
The Lady Bisons would retain the lead until Latoyia Jackson hit a 3-pointer to give Mercer a 50-49 lead. The Lady Bisons would keep it close until the final seconds when Mercer opened the final advantage on a series of free throws.
Rollins finished in double figures for the second game in a row, scoring a team-high 13 points. She also pulled down a a season-high and game-high nine rebounds. Bowers added 11 points, her fifth straight double figures game.
For the third time this season the Lady Bisons were perfect at the free throw line, hitting 10-of-10. They are the only team in the A-Sun to be perfect in free throws in a game.
Mercer placed four players in double figures. Jackson scored a game-high 22. Natasha Dom chipped in with 17. Courtney Ford added 11. Cristin Seymour chipped in with 10 points and a team high eight rebounds.
The Lady Bisons are 5-21, 3-14 in the A-Sun. Their final road game of the regular season is Saturday afternoon at Kennesaw State.
