The Lipscomb Lady Bisons had a season high 11 three-pointers but Morehead State held a 20 rebound advantage in their 62-53 win over the Lady Bisons Saturday afternoon in Morehead, Ky., in the MSU Invitational.
Morehead outrebounded Lipscomb 53-33. Valerie Bronson had a team high five boards for the Lady Bisons. Ashar Harris grabbed 22 rebounds for Morehead State. Harris had 14 offensive boards. Lipscomb had nine offensive rebounds as a team.
Morehead State held the early 15-6 advantage 5:30 into the game after Chynna Bozeman and Tiffany Hamilton connected on three-pointers on consecutive possessions.
Jenna Bartsokas found her three-point touch and nailed three longballs to bring the Lady Bisons within two points, 17-15, with 11:55 left in the first half.
The Lady Bisons didn’t scored for over four minutes before Anna Bowers connected on three-pointer cut Morehead State’s lead to one point.
Morehead State’s Abby Steele found her hot hand nailing two three-pointers to put Morehead State back up by eight with 3:31 left in the first half.
Layups by Brittany Duerk and Leah McAlister along with a three-pointer by Chelsea Burroughs allowed the Lady Bisons to make it a 29-28 game with just under two minutes remaining before halftime.
Steele drained another three-pointer and Deja Watson had a free throw to give Morehead State a 33-28 lead at the half.
Valerie Bronson posted the first points of the half for Lipscomb on a three-pointer three minutes into the second half. Lipscomb didn’t score again until Brittany Duerk had a layup with 12:18 left in the game.
Duerk’s basket started a 9-2 run for the Lady Bisons to bring them within six point, 46-40, with 9:28 remaining.
Lipscomb and Morehead State traded baskets until layups by Morehead’s Harris and Tiffany Hamilton put the Lady Bisons down ten with just over three minutes left.
Miaca Bowman hit a three for Lipscomb with 46 seconds left to the Lady Bisons within striking distance down 58-52.
Morehead State was able to connect on all four free throw attempts to end the game and secure the victory.
Bartsokas was the only Lady Bison to finish in double figures. She had 14 points on five-of-seven shooting including four-of-five from beyond the arc.
Lipscomb shot 11-of-28 from the three-point line for 39.3 percent. The Lady Bisons were 19-of-54 from the field for 35.2 percent.
After allowing Winston-Salem State to shoot 47.1 percent against them Friday evening, Lipscomb held Morehead State to 28.4 percent shooting. Morehead hit 8-of-32 three-pointers, but was 1-off-11 in the second half.
Lipscomb shot 4-off-11 from the free throw line. Morehead State was 16-of-19 from the charity line.
Morehead State had five players score in double figures lead by Hamilton off the bench with 14.
Lipscomb will seek to end its losing streak Sunday against Presbyterian at noon in the Lady Bisons’ final action of the Morehead State Invitational. Presbyterian lost to Morehead State 62-51 Friday evening. The Blue Hose lost in overtime 66-65 to Winston-Salem State Saturday.
