Lady Bisons seeking sweep of Stetson series
Lipscomb Lady Bisons coach Frank Bennett is looking for a repeat performance from his defense.

In Saturday’s 62-51 loss the Lady Bisons held Florida Gulf Coast to 33.3 percent shooting from the field and 30.4 percent from the 3-point arc. When the Lady Bisons face Stetson in a rematch Monday night at Allen Arena at 7 Bennett knows defense and rebounding will be major keys.

“That was a tremendous defensive effort,” Bennett said. “If you had told me before the game we would hold Florida Gulf Coast to 33 percent and 30 percent on threes I would have taken it.

“The ball pressure, the positioning and intensity were all really good.”

Bennett and his Lady Bisons know what to expect from Stetson. The Lady Bisons beat Stetson 73-72 Jan. 3 in overtime in DeLand, Fla.

“They are very long and athletic,” Bennett said. “They push the ball and drive the ball a lot. They will be a real challenge for us. “Natasha Graboski, their center, is 6-foot-3. They have good size overall with a lot of six-footers who play. It will be a defensive and rebounding challenge.”

The Lady Bisons are led by guards Jenna Bartsokas and Anna Bowers. Bartsokas is averaging 16.2 points overall, 18.5 in A-Sun games only. Bowers is averaging 13.5 points overall, 12.5 in conference games.

Forward Brittany Duerk is averaging 5.5 rebounds overall, 5.4 in A-Sun games.

Stetson is paced by Victoria McGowan with 14.3 points overall, 15.7 in conference games. Tierra Brown is scoring 13.6 points per game, 14.4 in A-Sun games. Jessica Conner is averaging 11.1 points overall and 13.1 in the A-Sun. She also leads Stetson in rebounds with six per contest.

“Brown is a left-handed wing player who is shooting the ball 42 percent from 3-point range in conference play,” Bennett said. “She has always been a nemesis for us.

“They had six players in double figures when we played them down there. There is really not one player you can focus on. They have good balance.”

Stetson is 10-10 overall, 6-5 in the A-Sun. The Lady Bisons are 8-13 overall, 5-7 in the conference.

“This is a big game for us,” Bennett said. “Stetson has played very well with wins against USC Upstate, Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida.

“We shot the ball extremely well against them the last time we played them. Defensively, we can do a lot of things better. We will see.”
