NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With a solid core of veteran players and five incoming freshmen, the Lipscomb women’s basketball is excited to get the 2011-12 season underway and the first step begins Sunday as the Lady Bisons hit the court for their first team practice.
“We’ve got more overall size, speed, quickness and a faster pace of play,” said Bennett. “So we’re really excited to start regular practice and to get to work each day.”
“We’ve really had a good preseason. The girls have really worked hard and conditioning has gone well. We’ve seen improvement each week and individual workouts have gone well.”
Senior guard Anna Bowers returns to lead the Lipscomb backcourt after averaging just over 13 points-per-contest a year ago. Fellow senior Brittany Duerk returns in the post for Lipscomb as well after starting all 30 contests and averaging 5.5 rebounds and 5.7 points each night as a junior.
“I think we’ve got a good mix (of players)” said Bennett. “We’ve got some veteran players who are doing a good job of showing leadership especially our seniors Brittany Duerk, Anna Bowers and Leah McAllister.”
The Lady Bisons also return juniors Hannah Phillips, Morgan Faulkner and Chelsea McMeans along with sophomores Haley Nelson, Jess Reece and O’Neisha Smith. Lipscomb also welcomes the “freshmen five” featuring Shanice Burnette, Kateca Favors, Sasha Robsinson, Erika Thornsberry and Jana Wright, who are all expected to make an immediate impact on the program.
Lipscomb opens play on Nov. 5th hosting Harding at Allen Arena at 5 p.m. before opening the regular season at home on Nov. 11th against Air Force. Season tickets are on sale for $150 and mini-packages start at $45. Call the Lipscomb athletic ticket office at 615-966-5990 for more information or to purchase over the phone.
