Bowers 20 not enough as Lady Bison fall in OT

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team got a 20-point effort from senior guard Anna Bowers but it would not be enough as homestanding Jacksonville downed the Lady Bison 81-75 in overtime in an Atlantic Sun Conference tilt at Swisher Gymnasium in Jacksonville.

Things looked good for the Lady Bison (3-11, 1-2 A-Sun) to win the contest in regulation as the Purple and Gold led 62-58 with 35 seconds to play but the Dolphins (3-10, 1-1 A-Sun) would knock down four free throws and force a Lipscomb turnover to send the contest into extra time.

Turnovers proved to be an Achilles heel for the Lady Bison all afternoon as Lipscomb committed four miscues in overtime as part of 31 on the afternoon.   The Dolphins converted the mistakes into 29 points in the contest, seven of which came in overtime.

Along with Bowers’ 20-point effort, Lipscomb got 16 points from junior wing Hannah Phillips, who scored in double figures for her seventh-straight game.  Freshman guard Jana Wright added 10 points for her first double-digit effort after coming into the contest with only nine total points on the year.

Freshman post Sasha Robinson grabbed 14 rebounds in the loss, the highest total of any Lady Bison this season and just missed her first career double-double after scoring eight points from the floor.  Robinson’s effort was not enough for Lipscomb to win the battle of the boards as Jacksonville hauled in 23 offensive rebounds and 47 overall to the Lady Bison’s 42.

The Dolphins posted four players in double figures led by senior guard Cyrstal Bell, who scored 19 for JU.

Lipscomb continues road A-Sun action in the “Sunshine State” on Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. tipoff against North Florida.
