Solid second half not enough as Lady Bison fall to North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Unable to overcome allowing 43 points in the first half, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team dropped a 77-67 Atlantic Sun Conference decision to homestanding North Florida at UNF Arena on Wednesday afternoon.

The Ospreys (5-9, 2-1 A-Sun) came out on a roll in the contest draining seven three pointers en route to their 43-30 halftime lead over the Lady Bison (3-12, 1-3 A-Sun).   Lipscomb aided North Florida’s outburst by turning the ball over 12 times in the opening stanza.

The second half however would see the Lady Bison regroup after the break and turn the ball over only four times on the way to a 37-34 advantage.  That would not be enough however to overcome the 13-point deficit at the break.

Lipscomb senior guard Anna Bowers led the Lady Bison in scoring for the third-straight game with a 15-point contest.  Junior wing Hannah Phillips followed just behind with 14 marking her eighth-straight game in double figures.  Freshman post Sasha Robinson joined Bowers and Phillips with a dozen, a career high for the newcomer, all in the second half.

UNF’s Brittany Kirkland led all scorers with a 21 point effort as the senior went 9-for-18 from the field. Larkira Jones led the way on the boards with an 11-rebound outing for the Ospreys.

Lipscomb freshman Erika Thornsberry paced the Lady Bison in rebounds with six as the Purple and Gold were outrebounded 38-28.   The Ospreys were also aided by going 19-for-29 from the free throw line compared to Lipscomb’s 7-for-17 effort at the charity stripe.   Lipscomb did outshoot North Florida 49.1 percent to 46.3 percent in the loss however.

The Lady Bisons continue road action on Saturday afternoon taking on rival Belmont at 2 p.m. at the Curb Event Center in Nashville.
