NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team returns to Don Meyer Court at Allen Arena on Thursday night against Atlantic Sun Conference foe Stetson playing at for the first time in nearly a month.
The Lady Bison (3-13, 1-4 A-Sun) return to the friendly confines after three road contests that saw Lipscomb go 0-3 with all three losses by 10 points or less. Stetson (15-3, 6-0 A-Sun) heads to the “Music City” on a roll having won nine straight contests including a perfect 6-0 mark in league play to sit atop the A-Sun.
Junior wing Hannah Phillips continues to pace the Lady Bison averaging 12.4 points a game overall and 15 a game in A-Sun play. Phillips also leads the team in rebounding averaging 5.5 boards a night and has scored in double digits in each of her last nine games. Senior guard Anna Bowers, who is closing in on 1,000 career points, ranks just behind Phillips averaging 11.9 points a night and 13.2 points per game in conference play. Bowers is also blistering A-Sun opponents from beyond the arch where she is 12 for 25 (.480).
The opponent: Stetson has yet to be beaten in conference action primarily due to the play of junior guard Victoria McGowan, the reigning A-Sun Player of the Week, who is averaging 17.1 points per game along with hauling in 6.9 rebounds per contest. A four-time A-Sun Player of the Week this year, McGowan has notched a pair of triple-doubles this season with the latest coming last week against Mercer.
The Hatters offense also relies on Shanasa Sanders, who adds 14.7 a night and Sasha Sims, who tosses in 11.4 points per game along with grabbing 7.5 boards each night. Stetson leads the all-time series 9-7 but the two teams have split their regular season series the last two seasons.
Up next: Lipscomb continues home action on Saturday afternoon hosting FGCU (14-2, 6-0 A-Sun) at 4 p.m. before the Lipscomb men tipoff at 6:30 p.m. against the Eagles. Along with being “Scout Night” for area Boy and Girl Scouts, the Bison are set to collect new and used books donations for the Book Em non-profit organization that distributes books to lower-income students in the Nashville area.
