NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team is set to close a chapter in the history of the “Battle of the Boulevard” hosting Belmont as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference for the last time on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. at Allen Arena.
The contest which will be broadcast live on ESPN3 features a pair of teams that have been playing solid basketball recently with Lipscomb (5-17, 3-8 A-Sun) and Belmont (8-14, 7-4 A-Sun)both coming off a pair of A-Sun victories last weekend over Jacksonville and North Florida. The Bruins hold a 39-27 advantage all-time in the series but Belmont owns a much slimmer 11-7 advantage in the NCAA era.
Along with the “Battle of the Boulevard” title, the contest features the “Battle of Haley Nelsons”. Belmont is led by their inside force Haley Nelson while Lipscomb’s Haley Nelson is a key reserve guard, who has played in all 22 games and averages 16.9 minutes and 4.0 points per contest. Despite going to school less than three miles apart, they are the only two Haley Nelsons in NCAA Division I basketball.
Senior guard Anna Bowers and junior wing Hannah Phillips lead the way for the Lady Bison with each averaging 12.5 points per game. Phillips is also leading the squad in rebounding hauling in 5.1 rebounds per game, assists (53) and steals. Bowers leads the club in three-point shooting having nailed 48 treys this season and is just nine short of the Lipscomb career record of 198 from downtown.
The opponent: One of the top defensive teams in the A-Sun, Belmont is holding their opponents to just 56 points per contest.
Belmont’s Nelson is the reigning Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, an honor the senior center has claimed three times this season. Nelson averages 15.3 points per game, a number that ranks third-best in the A-Sun, and is the top rebounder in the conference averaging 8.7 boards per game.
Up next: The Lady Bison make a trek to the “Sunshine State” for a weekend pair at A-Sun leader Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday and a Saturday meeting at Stetson.
