DELAND, Fla. – After a three-hour rain delay, the Lipscomb baseball team finally got things underway against Atlantic Sun foe Stetson but could not make it five straight Friday wins falling 7-2 at Melching Field in DeLand.
The Bisons (17-21, 9-7 A-Sun) drew first blood in the contest with a two-run third inning. Senior left fielder M.L. Williams got things going with a leadoff single to center field and then swiped second for his ninth steal of the season. Willams then came home on when junior centerfielder Zach Lowery ripped a double right down the chalk into left field.
Lowery then came across the dish when junior designated hitter Ricky Coleman ripped a pitch right back up the middle to make it a 2-0 lead for the Bisons.
The Hatters (24-13, 7-6 A-Sun) would cut the lead in half in the fourth behind a Bison error and a double to make it a 2-1 contest.
The fifth would prove to be the difference in the contest as Stetson made Lipscomb pay for three more defensive miscues to plate five runs and end the night for LU starter Connor Sinclair (5-3). After an error started the inning, the Hatters opted to play small ball and move the runner up to second. The ball plopped down right in front of the plate in the left-handed batter’s box but landed inside the foul line for a fair ball.
Stetson then put another bunt down and this time Sinclair could not get a handle on the ball and allowed the runner to load the bases with no outs. The trio of miscues along with a bases-loaded walk, hit-by-pitch and single led to a five-run inning for the home team and put the game squarely in Stetson’s hands.
The Hatters added an insurance run in the eighth as a leadoff walk proved to be costly.
Williams and Coleman led the Bisons with two hits a piece
The teams hope to get game two of the series in on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. but the weather forecast is very foreboding.
