FT. MYERS, Fla. – Making its sixth consecutive appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, the longest active streak in the A-Sun, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team plays USC Upstate Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Upstate will be making its first ever appearance in the A-Sun Tournament while the Bisons have played to a 3-4-1 record in the previous five trips.
The Bisons enter the tournament as the fifth seed after defeating Northern Kentucky 1-0 in overtime, in the regular season finale last Saturday. Junior Tyler Burkhardt hit the game-winning header in the 91st minute of play.
Lipscomb and Upstate battled on Oct. 21, with the Bisons falling 1-0 in overtime. Dave Musambi knocked in the game-winner in the 96th minute after Matt Flynn sent a flailing ball up for grabs off a free kick.
Head coach Charles Morrow said at the time, “We controlled the lion’s share of the game…but we did not create as good of chances as we needed to, to put one away.”
Lipscomb held the edge in shot attempts at 12-7. A fault point with the Bisons was the offsides they were called for, halting six scoring opportunities.
Upstate is led by Musambi with five goals and two assists while Dylan Hoop has three goals for the Spartans.
Goalkeeper Dani Alvarado has played every minute in goal for the Spartans, making 82 stops with a .828 save percentage. Alvarado plays to a 1.02 goals against average.
The A-Sun Championship is hosted by Florida Gulf Coast, after capturing the regular season title with a 6-1-1 league record. The only loss for the Eagles came at the hands of the Bisons on Oct. 6.
Preceding Lipscomb vs. Upstate will be ETSU against Jacksonville at 3 p.m.
