NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Greg Brown era is about to begin.
The Lipscomb women’s basketball coach and the Lady Bisons are set to make the 2012-13 regular season debut Friday at Gardner-Webb University. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The Lady Bisons played one exhibition game, a 55-49 victory over Freed-Hardeman. Senior Hannah Phillips led all scorers with 24 points and added 10 rebounds.
Lipscomb graduated last season’s top scorer, Anna Bowers, along with Brittany Duerk and Leah McAlister and will look to replace 60 percent of the scoring.
Of the returners for Brown’s squad, Phillips is the top returner averaging 11.1 points per game, 5.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists. After the exhibition victory, Brown alluded to different players that stepped up.
“Jana (Wright) came in and played well; Presley (Stastny) came in and continued to play well. Everything is going to be by committee, it is going to be a different lineup every night.”
Gardner-Webb was chosen to finish ninth in the Big South Conference Preseason Coach’s Poll after finishing 4-25 last season.
Juniors Catrina Green and Jasmine Dale led GWU in scoring last season at 12.1 and 9.9 points per game, respectively. Green was also honored with All-Big South Second Team accolades.
The winner of Friday night’s contest will become the overall leader in the all-time series between the two schools. The series is tied at 7-7 with Lipscomb taking last season’s match-up 76-65 in Nashville.
Following Gardner-Webb, the Lady Bisons make their home debut hosting cross-town SEC foe Vanderbilt. The Commodores will be making their first-ever visit to Allen Arena on Monday.
