Jacksonville, Fla. – In the final game of the 2012 calendar year, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team fell 77-64 to North Florida in the opening game of the Atlantic Sun Conference schedule.
With a 10-for-16 afternoon from the floor, Alex Banks scored a career-high 24 points, the highest total for a Lady Bison this season. The freshman eclipsed her previous career-high of 18 points set against Jacksonville State.
“We got great minutes out of Alex, Kelli (Smith) and Jana (Wright) as they pieced the whole game together,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. “We just gave up too many easy baskets and had a lack of communication too many times.”
The Lady Bisons fall in the A-Sun opener for the first time since 2009-10 season and drop to 1-10 on the season. The Ospreys improve to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Lipscomb jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a Kelli Smith trey. The Ospreys ran off eight unanswered points before Lipscomb tied the game at 8-8.
Banks scored on a layup to bring the score to 8-5 and followed that up with a 3-point basket after Hannah Phillips stole the ball to set up the shot with 16:54 remaining in the half.
North Florida steadily built an 18-point lead just before halftime at 39-21 before Presley Stastny hit a trey as the horn sounded to pull within 15 at the intermission break.
Lipscomb methodically chipped away at the Ospreys lead getting to within seven points with 5:28 remaining on the clock on a Phillips 3-point basket.
After Ki Connor put UNF back up by nine points, Banks scored on a short jumper to bring the deficit back to seven points with 3:44 remaining. However, that is the closest the Lady Bisons would get falling 77-64.
“The last ten minutes was the best basketball we played all year,” Brown said. “We were able to move the ball and got the shots that we wanted.”
Phillips snagged six rebounds while sophomore Jana Wright dished four assists.
“It was nice to see Alex play with the confidence that she had today,” Brown said. “We look forward to her playing with that confidence more throughout the year.”
The Ospreys placed four in double-digits led by Fabiola Josil with 19 points. Raneisha Lamar snagged a game-high 13 rebounds.
Lipscomb continues its stay in Jacksonville as they play Jacksonville University on Wednesday. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.
