Women's hoops returns home to host Jacksonville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After playing one of its most complete games of the season at Mercer on Saturday, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team returns home for an Atlantic Sun matchup with Jacksonville on Thursday.

The game is scheduled to tip at 6 p.m. inside Allen Arena and will be carried by ESPN3.

Thursday’s meeting will be the 22nd in the series history since Lipscomb joined D-1. The Dolphins hold a 13-8 advantage and have won the last four against the Lady Bisons.

Although Lipscomb (3-19, 0-11 A-Sun) is still searching for its first home win of the season, the Lady Bisons have beaten Jacksonville six times in Nashville, including two of the last three.

Lipscomb’s last win over Jacksonville came in Allen Arena on Jan. 26, 2012.

The two teams have met once already this season. JU took an 86-65 decision in Swisher Gym on Jan. 16.

Danay Fothergill and Ashley Southern did most of the work for the Lady Bisons, scoring all but 10 of the 65 points.

Fothergill hit a career-high 14-of-15 free throws and four 3-pointers in route to a 32-point and four assists effort. Southern scored 23 and tied her career-high with 10 made field goals. The redshirt-sophomore also snagged 13 rebounds.

The Dolphins had five players score double-figures, led by Queen Alford’s 17.

Fothergill paces Greg Brown’s squad with a 19.2 scoring clip. Southern averages 15.1 points and leads the conference in rebounding with 11.9 boards per game.

In Southern’s last outing she failed to get a double-double for just the fifth time this season (eight points and six rebounds).

Chandler Cooper has made a strong comeback after reinserting herself into the lineup following an injury. Since her return, Cooper is pouring in 18.2 per contest with 21 made 3-pointers to lead the team.

She is coming off of her first career A-Sun Newcomer of the Week honor after torching Mercer with a career-high 31 points. Cooper tied current assistant coach Anna Bowers for the most made 3-pointers in a single-game with eight.

Jacksonville (10-11, 7-3 A-Sun) currently sits in fourth place in the conference. The Dolphins are coming off of a season sweep after defeating North Florida 66-51 in the River City Rumble on Saturday.

JU has lost three of its last five games.

The Dolphins have only two players averaging double-figures on the season, led by Alford’s 13.2 points. Sherranda Reddick contributes 12.8 per game.

Alford is also the leading rebounder at 6.7 per contest.

After Thursday’s meeting, Lipscomb will host North Florida on Saturday. That game is currently scheduled for a 4 p.m. tip on ESPN3.
