Southern earns first career Player of the Week honor

MACON, Ga. – Lipscomb women’s basketball standout Ashley Southern has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week by both the league and College Sports Madness. It is the first time Southern has earned the honor.

Southern helped guide Lipscomb to its first league win of the season when the Lady Bisons defeated third-place Jacksonville on Thursday, 94-79. She scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the contest and hit her third 3-pointer of the year.

On Saturday, the redshirt-sophomore poured in a career-high 29 points in the 84-76 victory over North Florida. Southern was credited with 12 boards for her 18th double-double of the year.

The Tuscumbia, Ala., native connected on 12-of-17 shots from the field, setting Lipscomb’s NCAA record for most field goals in a game. The 29-point effort was Southern’s seventh 20-plus point game of the year, second most in the A-Sun.

Southern also tied a career-high with four assists in the victory.

For the week, Southern averaged 20 points and 9.5 rebounds in 32 minutes of play. The six-foot forward drained 16-of-28 shots for a 57.1 percent conversion rate.

Lipscomb gets the week off before returning to action Saturday Feb. 22 for a 6 p.m. matchup with Northern Kentucky in Allen Arena.
