MACON, Ga. – For the second week in a row, Lipscomb women’s basketball player Ashley Southern has received an Atlantic Sun weekly honor for her stellar play on the hardwood.
Southern was named A-Sun Newcomer of the Week on Monday for her performance Saturday against Northern Kentucky, just one week after claiming the distinction of Player of the Week.
It is Southern’s third Newcomer of the Week honor of her career.
The Tuscumbia, Ala., native poured in 27 points against the Norse, just one week removed from a career-high 29-point effort.
It was Southern’s eighth 20-plus point performance of the season and the second time in back-to-back games.
The redshirt sophomore also collected 10 rebounds for her A-Sun leading 19th double-double. She is now just three double-doubles shy of breaking the A-Sun’s single-season record of 21.
It was Southern’s 10th double-double in league play.
The 6-foot-1 forward upped her season scoring average to 16 per game while also adding 11.6 boards.
The Lady Bisons return to the court Thursday Feb. 27 for a 6:05 p.m. tip in Ft. Myers against Florida Gulf Coast.
