MACON, Ga. – Ashley Southern raised the bar for the Lipscomb women’s basketball program during the 2013-14 season putting up solid numbers and breaking records.
The Atlantic Sun Conference recognized Southern’s achievements by naming her to this year’s Preseason All-Conference Team.
I’m excited for Ashley,” said Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown. “It’s good for her. It’s recognition based on her body of work last year.”
Southern played and started in all 30 games last season for the Lady Bisons. She notched 22 double-doubles breaking the school record and posting the most double-doubles in the A-Sun since 2008. She was tied for 11th most double-doubles in the nation.
Southern was the second-leading scorer in the conference averaging 15.8 points per game. She was also the leading rebounder in the A-Sun averaging 11.4 rebounds per game, a number that ranked her 15th in the nation.
She was named Newcomer of the Year and was the first Lady Bison since the 2010-11 season to be named to the A-Sun All-Conference Team.
Southern racked up 473 points taking over the individual season record set by Jenna Bartsokas in 2010-11. She topped the record by 26 points.
Southern was a nominee for the fan-voted Preseason Player of the Year award alongside Florida Gulf Coast’s Whitney Knight, Jacksonville’s Briona Brown, and Kennesaw State’s Kristina Wells.
“She’s worked really hard,” Brown said. “Her maturity level and her growth over the summer has been fun to watch. We’re excited to watch what she can do this season and how she continues to grow on and off the floor.”
Southern rejoins the Lady Bisons for another season with a pair of exhibition matches against Freed Hardeman and Berea College on Oct. 30 and Nov. 7. The Purple and Gold lace up for regular season action in the first game of the season on Nov. 14 against Georgia Southern.
