NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With the regular season just weeks away, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team hosts Freed Hardeman in a mid-week exhibition match Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Allen Arena.
The Lady Bisons will prepare for regular season action while giving fans the opportunity to scout this year’s team, which includes five new freshmen - Kennedy Potts, Amber Fuqua, Emily Eubank, Loren Cagle, and Riley Northway.
Returners for the Purple and Gold include Sara Bliss, Danay Fothergill, Chandler Cooper, Kelli Smith, and Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference Team member Ashley Southern.
Southern broke the school record for most double-doubles last year collecting 22. She was tied for 11th-most double-doubles in the nation as well as the most in the conference since 2008.
Southern was the leading rebounder in the A-Sun averaging 11.4 rebounds per game and second-leading scorer averaging 15.8 points per game.
Fothergill looks to pick up where she left off last year. She led the league in scoring last year averaging 17.8 points per game. She also picked up the individual season record for most free throw attempts (180), free throws made (136) and scoring average (17.8 ppg).
Alex Banks will also be returning to the court for the Lady Bisons after missing competition last year due to injury.
Head coach Greg Brown enters his third season leading the Purple and Gold. Courtney Locke and Katherine Graham will begin their first seasons with Lipscomb as assistant coaches. Brown added the two college basketball standouts to the coaching staff over the summer.
Freed Hardeman capped off the 2013-14 season with an overall record of 36-2 and a conference record of 21-1. The Lady Lions advanced to their first-ever NAIA National Championship ultimately falling to Oklahoma City 80-76.
The Lady Bisons will play one last exhibition game against Berea College Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Allen Arena before kicking off the regular season Nov. 14 against Georgia Southern.
