NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team has spent several months preparing for the 2014-15 season, which is set to begin Friday Nov. 14.
The Lady Bisons take on Georgia Southern for the first time in the NCAA era Friday at 11 a.m. inside Allen Arena.
Lipscomb is coming off a 1-1 preseason performance falling 89-81 to Freed Hardeman and picking up a 75-41 victory over Berea College.
Junior Ashley Southern is picking up where she left off last season. The 6-foot-1 forward tallied two double-doubles in the pair of exhibition matches.
She recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds against Freed Hardeman going 6 for 16 from the field and hitting three out of five free throws. Southern picked up 19 points and 12 rebounds against Berea College shooting 6-for-13 on field goals and going seven for nine from the free throw line.
Senior Sara Bliss led the Lady Bisons against FHU scoring 16 points making six field goals and one free throw logging 22 minutes. She played 19 minutes against Berea College only seeing one field goal and going two for two at the charity stripe.
Southern and Bliss are two of eight key returners for the Purple and Gold. The other familiar faces for Lipscomb are Chandler Cooper, Danay Fothergill, Kelsey Gregory, Kelli Smith, Faith LeGate, and Alex Banks.
Fothergill is one of the top statistical returners for Lipscomb. Fothergill was tied for second in the Atlantic Sun averaging 2.1 three-pointers per game, tied for third in the conference with seven 20-plus games, and second in the league in free throws made and attempted (134-178).
Newcomers for the Lady Bisons include Kennedy Potts, Amber Fuqua, Emily Eubank, Loren Cagle, and Riley Northway. All five freshmen saw playing time in the preseason accumulating a combined 69 minutes against FHU and 92 minutes against Berea College.
Lipscomb capped off last season with an overall record of 6-24 and a conference record of 3-15.
Scouting the Eagles:
Georgia Southern triumphed in its exhibition with Coastal Georgia sealing a 114-60 victory over the Mariners.
The Eagles finished the 2013-14 season 10-21, 7-11 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Anna Claire Knight returns for Georgia Southern after leading the team last season in scoring picking up 493 points and averaging 15.9 points per game. The Eagles have introduced seven new members to the team.
