MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team rallied against Morehead State Saturday night to pick up its second victory of the season defeating the Eagles 61-59 at Johnson Arena.
“I thought we had practiced well,” said Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown. “I thought we were prepared. We talked about things we had to do to improve, and I thought we did a good job of carrying over from practice to a game.”
Ashley Southern was one rebound away from picking up her second double-double. She scored 23 points for the Lady Bisons and grabbed nine rebounds. Freshman Emily Eubank also made it into double figures scoring 11 points and making four assists.
In the first half, the Lady Bisons worked hard to establish the lead. Lipscomb held an eight-point advantage before Morehead State went on a 9-0 run. With the help of a three-pointer by Natalie Greenwell, the Eagles took back the lead, 21-20 with eight minutes left in the first half.
A layup by Southern knotted the score 31-31. However, it was Morehead State who would take control of the lead going into halftime after a pair of free throws by Almesha Jones.
The two teams kept the score within a couple of points throughout the second half. The Lady Bisons began to pick up steam leading by as many as nine points after a pair of free throws by Southern.
With the final seconds of the game winding down, the Eagles tied the game 59-59. Morehead’s Casey Ryans committed a foul with less than two seconds left, which gave Southern the opportunity to put the Lady Bisons back on top 61-59 after hitting two free throws.
“I thought we did what we needed to do,” Brown said. “We maintained poise. We worked on short seconds this week and how to maintain poise. We got the ball to Ashley and they had trouble guarding her. They were looking for the situation and her drawing the contact.”
The Purple and Gold continue to make improvements in ball handling only committing nine turnovers against the Eagles.
“We talked about passing and cutting and being tight with the ball,” Brown said. “Against athletic teams that are aggressive like that you have to do that. I thought they did a really good job against their pressing, and I think we can continue to cut those down a little bit more.”
The Lady Bisons improve to 2-4 while Morehead drops to 3-3.
