NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After building an eight point lead midway through the second half the Lipscomb women’s basketball team could not stave off a furious Jacksonville comeback and dropped a 75-63 Atlantic Sun contest Saturday afternoon in Allen Arena.

Lipscomb (8-18, 3-9) held the lead for most of the second half before the Dolphins (11-14, 6-6) charged back late to take the victory. The Lady Bisons similarly surrendered their lead late in the loss to North Florida on Thursday.

“I thought we played very hard for the whole game,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. “We just had some breakdowns at key times. I like the aggressiveness we had offensively. We got them into foul trouble. We did a lot of the things we talked about in practice.”

The Lady Bisons, usually prolific from three-point range, only managed to shoot 2-10 from behind the arc compared to Jacksonville’s 10-21 mark. Late turnovers and second-chance baskets from Jacksonville further stifled Lipscomb’s comeback hopes.

Danay Fothergill filled up the stat sheet for the Lady Bisons with 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists before fouling out late. Ashley Southern notched 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

“Both Fothergill and Southern played very strong,” Brown said. “We did a good job of getting them the ball in good situations. Fothergill took advantage of the mismatches she had by driving the ball.

“Southern likes that mid-post drive, and spacing helps open that up. We always talk about spacing as offense. We did a very good job with that in the first and second half as well. They made a run, and we gave up some offensive rebounds that hurt us in the second half.”

Briona Brown scored a game high 25 points for Jacksonville. She also added seven rebounds and four assists. Sherranda Reddick tallied 23 points for the Dolphins, and went 5-11 from the three-point line.

  • Emily Eubank tied for the team lead with four assists, her 19th time leading Lipscomb in assists this season.
  • Lipscomb outshot the Dolphins from the field 48.8 percent to 41.9 percent. They also made 21 free throws compared to the Dolphins 13.
  • Kayla Gordon scored 12 points, joining Brown and Reddick to give Jacksonville three double-digit scorers.
  • For the second time this season Fothergill and Southern he season opener against Georgia Southern.

UP NEXT: The Lady Bisons will finish the regular season at home against USC Upstate on Feb. 25, and then on the road at Kennesaw State on Feb. 28.
