NASHVILLE –Lipscomb women’s basketball (3-6) dropped a home matchup to Morehead State (4-5) on Saturday afternoon 92-77.
Senior Ashley Southern paced the Lady Bison with her third double-double of the season. For the sixth consecutive game she scored over 20 points to end up with 23 points and 19 rebounds.
“She continues to play like a senior,” Lipscomb women’s basketball head coach Greg Brown said. “Nine offensive rebounds is excellence. 23 and 19, and shooting 50 percent from the floor is the way to keep digging at it.”
The Purple and Gold won the rebounding battle 53-46, and snagged 20 offensive boards. However, the Lady Bisons were not able to convert the second chances into points.
“It’s a tough game if you look at the stats,” Brown said. “We had 20 offensive rebounds, 21 assists on 27 made baskets, and we out-rebounded them by seven, and you feel pretty good about. Some of the effort stats were good, but the empty possessions hurt us, and we had too many turnovers.
“We have to take care of the ball,” Brown said. “That’s a big thing. Southeast Missouri (SEMO) will play similar to this, so we have to be tight with the ball, which we generally do so I think we’ll be fine on that. We also have to continue the effort on the boards, and work on how to clean up those types of possessions once we get a second chance.”
Junior Alex Banks was the only other Lady Bison to post a double-digit scoring line. She notched 12 points and six rebounds
Sophomore Loren Cagle tallied another double-figure assist total. She finished with 11 assists to go along with eight points.
Sophomore Riley Northway compiled eight points and five rebounds, while senior Kelli Smith added six points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
- Morehead now owns a 3-1 series advantage over Lipscomb.
- Five Eagles finished in double-figures: Greenwell (23), Crockett (19), Tate (14), McKee (12), and Steele (14).
- Morehead State notched eight blocks in the game.
- All 10 Lady Bisons who played in the game scored at least one basket.
UP NEXT: The Lady Bisons will host SEMO and Ball State on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
“We do have a busy slate,” Brown said. “But that’s just how this part of the season is. We’ll take tomorrow off, come back on Monday to learn from this and grow from it to be ready for Tuesday night.”
