ROTHENBURG, Germany – Former Lipscomb women’s basketball player Ashley Southern will be continuing her playing career after signing a contract to play professionally in Germany.
Southern signed with BG ’89 Avides Hurricanes, a team which resides in Rothenburg, Germany and competes in the Damen Basketball Bundesliga (DBBL), the premier women’s basketball league in the country.
Southern, who finished her distinguished Bison career in March, is looking forward to the opportunity to continue on to the next level of competition.
“I am very excited to be playing at the next level,” Southern said. “I think I have a great opportunity to go to another country and get to continue to play basketball at a high level. Basketball has already created so many great opportunities for my life, and I look forward to all the new experiences that it will bring me.”
The move presents a unique situation to the Tuscumbia, Alabama native. Not only will Southern be beginning her career as a professional basketball player, but she will also be adapting to life in a new country.
“I am excited and anxious to be living and playing in another country,” Southern said. “I think it is always good to get out of your comfort zone, and I think living in another country will definitely do that.”
With the majority of Southern’s new teammates being native Germans, the language barrier will provide a challenge for the newly-transplanted Bison.
“The language barrier will probably be one of the hardest adjustments about living overseas, but I can’t wait to experience a new culture and meet new people,” Southern said. “I have always wanted to travel and see different parts of the world and to be able to play basketball at the same time seems like a pretty great fit to me.”
