NEWARK, N.J. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball turned in an impressive all-around performance to win on the road at NJIT 74-58 on Saturday afternoon.
“I like the way we responded,” Lipscomb women’s basketball head coach Greg Brown said. “We didn’t let out offense dictate the game in the first quarter after shooting 13 percent. We came back, got some key stops in the second quarter, and started making baskets.”
The Lady Bisons (7-14, 3-3) earned a much-needed ASUN win thanks to three double-figure scoring outings.
“A balanced scoring attack is what we like, sharing the ball and moving the ball,” Brown said. “I think that’s the key for us. And it’s been that way all year. They play very unselfish and alert to make the extra pass. That’s a compliment to them being good teammates.”
Senior Loren Cagle led the way with a game-high 21 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
Fellow senior Loshaveon Jones notched her first career double-double with 16 points and a team-best 10 rebounds. She also grabbed a steal and a block on defense.
“We out-rebounded a team again for the second week in a row,” Brown said. “Everybody is being more in-tune and more aggressive. We just haven’t taken pride in doing it at times, and we haven’t been consistent with our effort.
“The 19 assists on 26 made baskets is excellent. I was proud of the fact that they continued to do what we’ve been working on at practice for that practice-to-game carry-over.”
Redshirt-freshman Emily Kmec scored 12 points, all on three-pointers, and added five rebounds and one block.
Senior Kennedy Potts poured in nine points, also all from downtown, to go with six rebounds and a steal.
Sophomore Lauren Rau collected six points, three rebounds, a team-best eight assists, and two steals.
Senior Meredith Lovelady drained a pair of clutch three-pointers to finish with six points.
“I’m happy for them to see what we’re working on in practice carry over and for them to be rewarded for their work and effort and unselfishness.”
- One Highlander finished in double-figures: Tatiana Torres (18).
- The Lady Bisons scored 28 points in the paint to NJIT’s 18.
- Lipscomb out-rebounded NJIT 37-31, and won the assist battle 19-11.
- Seven Lady Bisons played 10 or more minutes: Cagle (with a team-high 36 minutes played), Jones, Rau, Kmec , Potts, Taylor Clark, and Lexi Manos.
- The Purple and Gold shot 11-26 from three-point range.
UP NEXT: The Lady Bisons will head back home to take on USC Upstate on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
“We just really need to continue to clean up stuff that we’ve done: we have to cut down turnovers and continue working on our rebounding and moving the ball. It’s more about us at this point than it is the opponent.”
