Women's Hoops wins thriller over Tennessee State in season opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The season opener for Lipscomb women’s basketball went to the wire Friday against Tennessee State, but Lauren Rau made sure the Lady Bisons prevailed 64-62 in Allen Arena.

The junior guard came around a screen at the top of the circle and took the inbounds pass with 4.9 seconds to play. Rau then drove at the lane and laid it off the glass and into the bucket for the game-winner - her first points of the game.

“Coach (Brown) drew up a play, and we had not run anything he wanted us to all game long, but evidentially we ran that one well,” Rau said with a chuckle. “I was struggling to get going throughout the game, but on that play I got the ball off a screen and saw an open lane and went for it.”

After a back-and-forth affair in the first half, the Tigers (0-1) went into the break leading 25-24. TSU pounced on the Bisons (1-0) out of the break with a quick run to extend their largest lead of the night to 36-26. From that point on it was Lipscomb’s turn.

Brown’s squad reeled off a 14-0 run, half of which came from freshman Jane Deason, to take control 40-36. Lipscomb never trailed the rest of the night.

“That run was all hustle plays,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. “We got loose balls, rebounds, tips, and we got it inside. That was what changed this game.”

Deason led all scorers with 17 points after going 7-of-11 from the field, including three from long range. She got her night started off right with a pair of triples in the opening quarter.

Freshmen Keely Morrow and Kailey Rosenbaum each chipped in 13 points with big nights at the free throw line. Morrow sank 6-of-7, while Rosenbaum nailed 7-of-9.

“The freshmen played awesome, they came up huge in the second half.” Rau said. “I think it was big for them to have this type of game on opening night so they have some experience as we go into the rest of the season.”

Carleigh Short was the fourth Bison in double figures with 10.

The Lady Bisons shot 45.8% from the floor after hitting 22 of their 48 shots. TSU connected on 42.9% (24-of-56).

“I was very proud of how our team came back, knowing that it didn’t feel right most of the night,” Brown said. “This game will mean a lot when we get into conference play. It will give them confidence and show that we can win close ballgames."

BISON TIDBITS:

  • It marks the first season-opening victory for the Lady Bisons since downing Georgia Southern 80-74 in 2014.
  • Lipscomb outrebounded TSU 32-30. Rosenbaum, Deason, Morrow and Taylor Hammack each pulled down five board apiece.
  • The Lady Bisons connected on 15-of-20 from the stripe and 5-of-18 from deep.
  • Short led the team with three assists. Three other players each recorded two.
  • TSU picked up 11 steals, while Lipscomb had 10.

The Bisons hit the road for their first game away from Allen Arena on Sunday, as they travel to face Clemson out of the ACC. Tip is set for 1 p.m. in a game that can be seen on ESPN3.

"It's going to be a challenge, but I think it's a game our team is looking forward to," Brown said.
