Women's basketball earns big win across town at Tennessee State

NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb women’s basketball team earned a hard-fought 74-64 win against cross-town opponent Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon at the Gentry Center.

“I thought today, for us to get a road win with a really young team, always means a whole lot,” Lipscomb women’s basketball head coach Lauren Sumski said.

The Lady Bisons started out the game on fire, shooting 4-6 from beyond the arc in the first quarter including back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Jalyn Holcomb. Lipscomb closed out the frame on a 16-4 run for an 11-point lead heading into the second period.

“Right now, our kids are in the middle of finals, but they were able to be really locked in on the scout and executed what we asked of them,” Sumski said.

While the first quarter was Lipscomb’s, the second quarter belonged to TSU. The Tiger put together a 9-0 run to not only get back into the contest, but to retake the lead.

Lipscomb went on one last first-half run of their own, scoring eight points in the final 1:48 of the half, capped by a jumper from freshman Casey Collier with two seconds left, to take a 42-37 lead into the break.

The runs did not stop in the first half. Lipscomb came out of the break with another great start, beginning the second half on an 11-0 run that broke the game open into double-digits.

The Lady Tigers went on one final run, a 15-4 stretch, that brought them back within single digits. However, Lipscomb was able to hang onto the lead and the win.

“What we’ve been preaching to our team for the last couple weeks is to be able to withstand runs. That’s just a part of basketball,” Sumski said.

“I thought we did that today. I don’t think we panicked in any sort of situation. We turned the ball over way more than I would have liked, but I think we’re finally understanding how to control pace and tempo.”

Freshman Casey Collier led Lipscomb with 18 points and four assists despite fouling out in the fourth quarter. The point guard shot 5-7 from the field, 8-10 from the free throw line, grabbed six rebounds, and notched one steal and one block.

Freshman Jalyn Holcomb scored 17 points on 5-9 shooting, including a stellar 4-5 from three-point range, and 3-4 from the charity stripe. She also swiped a team-high three steals.

“I thought we threw it at them both (the freshmen). They played about 35 minutes each,” Sumski said. “What I was most proud of was when there were lulls, Jalyn stepped up and made big shots.”

Junior Taylor Clark added 14 points and corralled a team-best eight rebounds.

“People don’t see how impressive Taylor has been,” Sumski said. “She’s been incredibly efficient all year long for us.”

Lipscomb improves to 2-7 with the win, while TSU falls to 1-6.
