Sophomore Catherine Beals was the top finisher for the Lady Bisons. She was 16th in the field of 85 runners Saturday morning at the Sperling Sports Complex in DeLand, Fla. Beals covered the 5-K course in a time of 18:39.
Junior Caitlin Anderson was right on the heels of Beals. She crossed the finish line in 17th place with a time of 18:40. Sophomore Ashley Lehman was 24th with a time of 18:56.
"I'm extremely proud of the women's effort,” said coach Bill Taylor. “They fought today and raced with heart. Catherine and Caitlin ran well together up in the race.”
Sophomore Louisa Van Batavia was 35th with a time of 19:16.
Lady Bisons’ runners claimed the 37th through 39th spots. Freshman Shelby Marvel posted a time of 19:19. Freshman Priya Pappu had a time of 19:21. Jenny Randolph was one second behind Pappu with a time of 19:22.
Freshman Amanda Twigg was 53rd with a time of 20:06.
Senior Shannon Shoemake finished 59th with a time of 20:32.
“The women had by far their best race of the year,” said Taylor. “We finished better than our ranking.
“To be honest, both teams are close to competing at the top of our conference. We just need to continue building this.”
Five runners, Catherine, Ashley, Louisa, Shelby and Priya, ran all-time personal records for a 5-K race.
“It's terrific to have so many PRs in our last 5-K of the season,” said Taylor. “The A-Sun conference gets tougher and deeper every year. It has become a very exciting and competitive meet.
“The women have a ton of potential. We really need a front runner or two, but today was a very positive step towards future success.”
