MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference awarded Lipscomb University's Tessa Hoefle the 2012 Atlantic Sun Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Thursday morning.
This is Hoefle's second year being named scholar-athlete of year after being awarded the title in the 2011 season. Hoefle is an English major with a 4.0 GPA.
The Lady Bison was also named to the Atlantic Sun First Team All-Conference after her fifth place finish in the 2012 championship.
She was fourth this season at the FGCU Invite and 13th at the Alabama Crimson Classic.
"Tessa deserves the honor for the second year in a row,” Lipscomb cross country coach Bill Taylor said. “She runs incredible and works very hard on her academics. She also is a team captain, a spiritual leader and a great person. “
Junior Dani Walker, with a 3.45 GPA in Kinesiology, and sophomore Maggie Lawrence, with a 4.0 GPA in Biochemistry, were unanimous selections to the A-Sun Women’s Cross Country All-Academic Team. Redshirt freshman Kendra Lobley also was named to the team with a 3.6 average in Biochemistry.
“It's a big statement that all three of our team captains, Tessa, Dani and Maggie, are All-Conference athletically and earned Scholar-Athlete team honors,” Taylor said. “They are leading by example...leading from the front.
“We have wonderful people here who do things right. They encourage each other and hold each other accountable. It's an environment of success and these four women lead that.”
The A-Sun introduced the new sport-by-sport Academic All-Conference teams in the 2011-12 academic year to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better and participated in at least half of their team’s games.
