Sunday, March 14, 2010Amanda Twigg continued her terrific freshman season as a Lady Bison by picking up two wins for Lipscomb at the Birmingham Southern Invitational.
Despite windy and cold conditions, Amanda beat a field of 43 women in the 800m with a time of 2:18.13. Later she helped lead the Lipscomb women’s 4x400m Relay A team to victory as well, running a 58-second split. Amanda now has three wins in the outdoor season, out of two meets (she won the 1500m last week at UNF).
“Amanda is a terrific middle distance runner,” head coach Bill Taylor said. “It’s been a terrific indoor, and now outdoor, season for her. She ran a big negative split in the 800m.
“Like last week in the 1500m, the pace just wasn’t fast early on. They came through in 71 seconds for the first lap. So she put in pretty close to a 66- second lap. There were pretty strong winds throughout most of the meet and it was cold. Amanda did a great job in both races!”
Other highlights of the meet included a more than 40-second PR for Louisa Van Batavia in the women’s 5000m (18:32.94, 3rd place) and another woman, Priya Pappu, under 5:00 in the 1500m ( 4:56.21, 9th place).
Six out of seven men in the 5000m set new PRs (Isaiah Greer, 15:49.14, Jared Carlson, 15:53.60, Mike Yang, 15:57.17, Benton Reed, 15:59.15, Hunter Hethcoat, 16:20.97 and Ben Wright, 16:27.09). Jonathan Williams won in the men’s steeplechase (the only men’s event win on the day for Lipscomb).
“I was happy with the meet,” Taylor said. “The conditions were tough, spring break just started, yet our athletes went out and competed very hard. It was a great way to go into the break and a very positive sign for the rest of the season.”
The next meet is the Austin Peay Spring Fling March 20 in Clarksville, Tenn.
