Friday, September 17, 2010The Lipscomb men’s and women’s cross country will be in action Saturday at the Commodore Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt University at Vaughn’s Gap in Percy Warner Park here in Nashville.
The men will race an 8-K at 9 a.m. The women will race a 5-K at 10 a.m.
The Bisons and Lady Bisons expect to build on a very strong start to the 2010 season.
There will be seven regionally ranked teams competing at the Commodore Classic. On the men’s side Tennessee is ranked No. 4, Chattanooga is ranked No. 9, Belmont is ranked No. 11 and MTSU is ranked No. 14, all in the South Region.
On the women’s side Vanderbilt is ranked No. 3, Tennessee is ranked No. 6 and Chattanooga is ranked No. 14 in the South region. Vanderbilt is ranked No. 39 in the nation.
Lipscomb’s men and women posted seven all-time PR’s at the Vermont meet last week for 5Ks or 8Ks. Fourteen men and women competed with 50 percent of Lipscomb runners posting their all-time best in the first 5-K and 8-K of the season.
Four Lipscomb women broke the 4-K school record at the Belmont Opener two weeks ago. Eight Lipscomb women ran faster than the fastest LU runner in 2009.
In two races Lipscomb has had two different women finish first for the team. Both have been freshmen. Dani Walker (Wichita, Kan.) led the Lady Bisons at the Belmont Opener. Atlantic Sun Women’s XC Athlete of the Week Alex Newby (Knoxville, Tenn.) led at Vermont.
Sophomore Tim Muller has led the Bisons to the finish line in both meets this season.
Note: if you are coming out to cheer on the Bisons and Lady Bisons at Vaughn’s Gap, avoid traveling Old Hickory. There is a huge high school invitational at the Steeplechase course at the same time, and traffic backups on Old Hickory can be up to an hour.
